A device is a piece of hardware from which we can collect data. The device will have a host name and an IP address and we can collect data using:
SNMP | Traps | Netflow | Syslogs | Etc. |
Devices are made up of different components.
Here are some examples: | A CPU | Interfaces | Some traffic shaping policies | Various environmental monitors |
Power supplies | Cooling fans | Line cards | Radios | Memory |
Each of these components have a unique identifier. For example: An interface might be called fe0/1, a policy map might be called gold or silver, a CPU might reside on a line card or on the router chassis itself. These unique names make up the elements of the device.
